SBI UPI PIN Reset – Forgot PIN, Debit Card & Aadhaar Methods

The SBI UPI PIN Reset facility allows customers to create a new UPI PIN when the existing PIN is forgotten, blocked after repeated incorrect attempts or needs to be changed for security reasons.

In YONO SBI, customers can open the UPI Profile, select the linked bank account and use the Reset UPI PIN option. SBI currently supports UPI PIN reset using eligible debit-card verification or Aadhaar-based verification when the Aadhaar number is correctly mapped with the registered mobile number and bank account.

The UPI PIN is different from the YONO MPIN, ATM PIN, Internet Banking password and debit-card CVV. It is primarily used to authorise UPI debit transactions from the linked bank account.

What Is an SBI UPI PIN?

A UPI PIN is the confidential numeric credential used to authorise eligible UPI debit transactions from a bank account linked to a UPI application.

The PIN is linked with the selected bank account rather than simply with the mobile application.

For example, if a customer links the same SBI account with more than one eligible UPI application, the UPI PIN relates to the bank account and can be used through supported UPI apps after proper device and account registration.

Never share the UPI PIN with:

  • SBI employees
  • Customer-care callers
  • Merchants
  • Delivery agents
  • Friends or relatives
  • Screen-sharing operators

SBI UPI PIN vs YONO MPIN vs ATM PIN

Credential Main purpose
UPI PIN Authorises eligible UPI debit transactions from the linked bank account
YONO MPIN Convenient login to the YONO SBI application
ATM PIN Debit-card and ATM authentication
Internet Banking Password Login to SBI Internet Banking
Card CVV Debit-card verification for eligible card transactions

Do not deliberately use the same easy-to-guess digits for the UPI PIN, ATM PIN and YONO MPIN.

For YONO MPIN recovery, read: SBI YONO MPIN Reset Guide .

When Should You Reset the SBI UPI PIN?

Reset the PIN when:

  • You forgot the existing UPI PIN
  • The app displays “Number of PIN tries exceeded”
  • The PIN may have been seen by another person
  • You entered the PIN on a suspicious screen
  • A fraudster may know the PIN
  • You want to create a new secure PIN

Do not repeatedly guess a forgotten PIN.

If the SBI debit card itself is lost or compromised, block it instead of using it for PIN recovery.

For debit-card security guidance, read: SBI Debit Card Block & Unblock Guide .

Privacy tip: Do not share a complete Aadhaar number, Aadhaar OTP or screenshot containing Aadhaar details with an unknown person claiming to help with UPI PIN reset.

Why Is the Aadhaar UPI PIN Reset Option Not Showing?

The Aadhaar-based option may not be available in every situation.

Possible reasons include:

  • Aadhaar is not correctly mapped with the selected bank account
  • The mobile number used for UPI does not match the relevant registered records
  • The selected account or bank setup does not currently offer Aadhaar verification through that screen
  • The application needs an update
  • Temporary Aadhaar or bank verification services are unavailable

When Aadhaar verification is unavailable, use an eligible debit-card method or contact SBI for account-specific guidance.

How to Change SBI UPI PIN When You Know the Old PIN

Changing a known UPI PIN is different from resetting a forgotten PIN.

The general process is:

  1. Login to YONO SBI.
  2. Open YONO Pay and UPI.
  3. Open UPI Profile or Manage Accounts.
  4. Select the required bank account.
  5. Select Change UPI PIN where available.
  6. Enter the current UPI PIN.
  7. Enter the new PIN.
  8. Confirm the new PIN.
  9. Check the successful-change message.

If the old PIN is not known, use Reset UPI PIN instead.

SBI UPI “Number of PIN Tries Exceeded” Error

SBI specifically advises customers receiving the Number of PIN tries exceeded message to reset the UPI PIN for the affected account.

Do this:

  1. Stop trying random PIN combinations.
  2. Open YONO SBI.
  3. Go to the UPI Profile.
  4. Select the affected account.
  5. Select Reset UPI PIN.
  6. Complete debit-card or Aadhaar verification.
  7. Create a new PIN.

Do not continue attempting the old PIN after the maximum number of tries has been reached.

Wrong SBI UPI PIN: How Many Attempts Are Allowed?

SBI's current UPI FAQ states that a maximum of three attempts are allowed when an incorrect UPI PIN is entered.

After repeated incorrect attempts, the customer may receive a PIN-tries-exceeded message and should use the official Reset UPI PIN facility.

This security restriction is designed to reduce unauthorised guessing of the account PIN.

SBI UPI “Debit Card Not Found” Error

SBI states that this error normally occurs when the debit card being used is not mapped with the selected bank account.

Check:

  • The selected SBI account
  • The debit card linked with that account
  • Whether the card has been replaced
  • Whether an old or another account's card is being used
  • Whether the card is active and correctly mapped

Do not repeatedly enter details of unrelated debit cards.

If a newly issued replacement card is not recognised, allow normal bank-system updating time and contact SBI when the mapping remains incorrect.

Registered Mobile Number and SIM Verification

UPI registration uses the mobile number linked with the bank account and the SIM installed in the device.

Before resetting PIN or re-registering UPI:

  • Install the bank-registered SIM in the phone
  • Select the correct SIM in a dual-SIM phone
  • Allow SMS permissions required by the official app
  • Ensure outgoing SMS is available
  • Maintain sufficient prepaid balance where applicable
  • Use a stable mobile network

SBI's FAQ notes that mobile-number-fetch errors can occur because of network connectivity or insufficient prepaid balance.

Using SBI UPI after Changing the Mobile Phone

UPI registration is protected by device binding.

When the mobile handset changes but the registered SIM remains the same, the app may require re-verification.

The general process is:

  1. Install the official YONO SBI app on the new phone.
  2. Insert the registered SIM.
  3. Complete mobile and device verification.
  4. Select the SBI account.
  5. Enter the existing UPI PIN when requested for verification.
  6. Complete the re-registration process.

If the existing UPI PIN is also forgotten, use the official reset process instead of guessing.

What Happens after SIM or Mobile Number Change?

Same Mobile Number, Replacement SIM

Fresh device or SIM verification may be required even when the mobile number remains unchanged.

New Mobile Number

The new number must be correctly linked with the SBI account before UPI registration can use it.

When both the handset and registered mobile number have changed, SBI advises customers to update the new mobile number with the Bank and complete UPI registration again.

Do not attempt to register the account using another person's SIM.

SBI Bank Account Not Showing in UPI

Possible reasons include:

  • The mobile number does not match SBI records
  • The selected SIM is incorrect
  • The account is not correctly mapped with the mobile number
  • The account is inactive or restricted
  • The bank-account discovery request temporarily failed
  • Network connectivity is poor

Try:

  1. Confirm the registered mobile number.
  2. Select the correct SIM.
  3. Restart the phone.
  4. Update the official app.
  5. Retry bank-account discovery.
  6. Contact SBI if the account remains missing.

SBI UPI Limits after Setting or Resetting UPI PIN

SBI UPI PIN reset cooling period transaction limits three PIN attempts lost phone and UPI security tips
After a UPI PIN reset, temporary security limits may apply;
never share the UPI PIN and block UPI promptly if the phone is lost.

SBI applies a security cooling period after setting or resetting a UPI PIN.

Android

SBI's current guidance states that the first transaction after setting or resetting the UPI PIN is subject to a maximum of ₹5,000, with a cumulative amount of ₹5,000 during the first 24 hours.

iOS

SBI currently states a limit of ₹5,000 per day for the first five days after setting or resetting the PIN.

After the Cooling Period

SBI currently publishes a standard limit of up to ₹1,00,000 per transaction and per day for normal BHIM SBI Pay / YONO SBI / YONO for Every Indian UPI transactions, subject to transaction type, NPCI rules and Bank discretion.

Limit note: UPI limits can change and some transaction categories have separate limits. Always follow the limit displayed in the current SBI application.

UPI Payment Failed after Resetting the PIN

A newly reset PIN does not mean that every payment amount becomes immediately available.

Check:

  • The post-reset cooling-period limit
  • Available bank-account balance
  • Correct UPI PIN
  • Daily transaction limit
  • Mobile-network connectivity
  • SBI UPI service availability
  • Beneficiary UPI status

If the app shows that money was debited but the beneficiary did not receive it, do not repeatedly send the same payment until the original transaction status is checked.

Do You Need a UPI PIN to Receive Money?

You do not need to enter your UPI PIN simply because another person is sending money to your bank account.

A UPI PIN is used when you authorise a debit, payment, mandate or another transaction that moves money from your account.

Scam warning: If someone says, “Enter your UPI PIN to receive money,” carefully read the screen. Entering the PIN may actually authorise a debit or collect request.

Always check:

  • Whether the screen says Pay, Send, Approve or Mandate
  • The recipient name
  • The amount
  • Whether money is being debited from your account
