SBI UPI Transaction Limit – Daily Limit, P2P, Merchant & Cooling Period

The SBI UPI Transaction Limit determines how much money a customer can send through BHIM SBI Pay, UPI on YONO SBI and other eligible SBI-supported UPI services during a transaction or within a 24-hour period.

For normal UPI payments, SBI currently publishes a standard limit of ₹1,00,000 per transaction and ₹1,00,000 per day after the applicable security cooling period.

Different rules can apply to person-to-person transfers, merchant payments, UPI Lite, newly set or reset UPI PINs and selected verified-merchant categories that are permitted higher limits under NPCI rules.

Important: SBI-HRMS.com is an independent informational website and is not affiliated with State Bank of India. UPI limits can be changed by SBI, NPCI or RBI. Always follow the limit displayed in the current SBI or UPI application before authorising a payment.
Quick answer: SBI currently allows normal UPI transactions of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction and ₹1 lakh per day. For P2P transfers, a maximum of 20 transactions per account in 24 hours applies within the ₹1 lakh limit. P2M merchant payments do not have the same 20-transaction count cap, but the applicable value limit still applies.

SBI UPI Transaction Limits: Quick Information

SBI UPI limits table showing one lakh daily limit P2P count cooling period UPI Lite and IPO limits
SBI UPI limits vary by transaction type, with separate rules for normal UPI,
P2P transfers, cooling periods, UPI Lite and IPO payments.
UPI service Current published limit
Normal UPI – per transaction Up to ₹1,00,000
Normal UPI – per day Up to ₹1,00,000
P2P transaction count Maximum 20 transactions per account in 24 hours
P2M transaction count No separate SBI transaction-count cap within the applicable value limit
After UPI PIN set/reset – Android ₹5,000 cumulative during the first 24 hours
After UPI PIN set/reset – iOS ₹5,000 per day for the first 5 days
UPI Lite – single payment Up to ₹1,000
UPI Lite balance Up to ₹5,000
IPO through UPI Up to ₹5,00,000 per application transaction

Limits are subject to NPCI rules, the transaction category, merchant verification, account status and SBI's own risk controls.

What Is the Standard SBI UPI Transaction Limit?

SBI currently publishes a standard UPI transaction value limit of:

₹1,00,000 per transaction

and:

₹1,00,000 per day

This standard limit applies after any initial cooling-period restriction has ended.

It applies to normal eligible UPI transactions through SBI-supported services including:

  • UPI on YONO SBI
  • BHIM SBI Pay
  • YONO for Every Indian
  • Other eligible UPI applications using an SBI account, subject to applicable limits

Per-Transaction Limit vs Daily UPI Limit

The two limits are different.

Per-Transaction Limit

This is the maximum amount that can normally be sent in one UPI transaction.

For example:

A normal ₹1,20,000 P2P transfer cannot usually be sent as one standard SBI UPI transaction because the normal per-transaction ceiling is ₹1 lakh.

Daily Limit

The daily limit is the maximum permitted cumulative value during the applicable 24-hour period.

Example:

  • First payment: ₹40,000
  • Second payment: ₹30,000
  • Third payment: ₹30,000

The cumulative amount is ₹1 lakh.

Another normal UPI payment from the same account may then be rejected until the applicable limit becomes available again.

SBI P2P UPI Transaction Limit

P2P means Person-to-Person.

Examples include:

  • Sending money to a family member
  • Paying a friend
  • Transferring money to another individual's UPI ID
  • Sending money to a personal bank account through UPI

SBI currently publishes:

  • ₹1 lakh normal UPI value limit
  • Maximum 20 P2P transactions per account in 24 hours

The 20-transaction limit applies even when the total value is below ₹1 lakh.

Example

If a customer sends 20 payments of ₹100 each, the total value is only ₹2,000, but the P2P transaction-count limit may already have been reached.

SBI Person-to-Merchant UPI Limit

P2M means Person-to-Merchant.

Examples include:

  • Shop QR payments
  • Restaurant bills
  • Online merchant checkout
  • Utility payments
  • Eligible commercial UPI payments

SBI's current standard guidance states that P2M payments do not have the same 20-transactions-in-24-hours count restriction that applies to P2P transactions.

However, the applicable daily value limit still applies unless the merchant belongs to an eligible higher-limit category.

SBI UPI 20 Transactions in 24 Hours Rule

The 20-transaction rule applies to P2P payments per account.

It is important to understand that this is:

  • Per account
  • Within 24 hours
  • Independent of whether the ₹1 lakh value limit has been fully used

Therefore, a customer can hit either:

  • The transaction-count limit; or
  • The transaction-value limit

whichever occurs first.

SBI UPI Cooling Period after Setting or Resetting PIN

SBI UPI cooling period after PIN reset with Android 24 hour and iPhone five day limits
After setting or resetting the UPI PIN, SBI applies temporary
lower transaction limits on Android and iPhone for security.

SBI applies a temporary security restriction after a UPI PIN is newly set or reset.

This is intended to reduce fraud risk immediately after credential changes.

During this cooling period, the normal ₹1 lakh UPI limit is not immediately available.

For complete PIN-reset instructions, read: SBI UPI PIN Reset Guide .

Android Limit after Setting or Resetting SBI UPI PIN

SBI's current guidance states:

  • Maximum first transaction: ₹5,000
  • Maximum cumulative amount during the first 24 hours: ₹5,000

After the cooling period is completed, the standard SBI UPI limits become applicable, subject to the account and transaction category.

Example

After resetting UPI PIN:

  • ₹3,000 first transaction succeeds
  • Only ₹2,000 remains within the initial ₹5,000 cumulative limit

A ₹5,000 second payment may therefore fail during that initial period.

iPhone SBI UPI Limit after PIN Reset

For iOS users, SBI currently publishes a stricter initial period:

₹5,000 per day for the first 5 days

This applies after setting or resetting the UPI PIN under SBI's current published guidance.

Do not assume an iPhone will move to the ₹1 lakh limit after only 24 hours.

What Is the SBI UPI Lite Transaction Limit?

UPI Lite is designed for small-value payments without requiring the UPI PIN for every individual Lite payment.

Current RBI/NPCI limits permit:

  • Up to ₹1,000 per UPI Lite transaction
  • Up to ₹5,000 balance in the UPI Lite wallet
Current-information note: Some older SBI FAQ text still shows the previous ₹500 per transaction and ₹2,000 balance limits. RBI, NPCI and SBI's later UPI-limit guidance reflect the enhanced ₹1,000 / ₹5,000 limits, so the newer values are used in this guide.

SBI UPI Lite Balance and PIN Requirement

UPI Lite is different from a normal UPI payment.

For a normal UPI transaction:

  • Money is generally debited directly from the linked bank account
  • UPI PIN is normally required for an outgoing payment

For UPI Lite:

  • Money is first loaded into the UPI Lite balance
  • Eligible small-value Lite payments can then be made without entering UPI PIN each time
  • The wallet balance is subject to the current RBI/NPCI ceiling

Loading or managing the Lite balance can still require authentication.

Higher UPI Transaction Limits for Special Categories

The ₹1 lakh standard limit is not the ceiling for every type of UPI payment.

NPCI and RBI permit higher limits for selected use cases.

Examples can include:

  • IPO applications
  • RBI Retail Direct
  • Tax payments
  • Eligible hospitals
  • Eligible educational institutions
  • Capital markets
  • Insurance
  • Selected verified merchants

However, an enhanced NPCI ceiling does not automatically guarantee that every SBI customer can send that amount to every merchant.

The merchant must be correctly categorised and eligible, and SBI may apply its own internal transaction controls.

Latest NPCI Higher Limits for Verified Merchants

Higher UPI transaction limits for verified merchant categories including capital markets insurance travel and credit card bills
Eligible verified-merchant categories can support higher NPCI UPI ceilings,
while SBI may still apply lower internal limits.

NPCI's August 28, 2025 circular enhanced limits for several specified verified-merchant categories.

Category NPCI enhanced per-transaction ceiling 24-hour cumulative ceiling
Capital Markets ₹5 lakh ₹10 lakh
Insurance ₹5 lakh ₹10 lakh
Government e-Marketplace EMD payments ₹5 lakh ₹10 lakh
Travel ₹5 lakh ₹10 lakh
Credit Card Bill Payments ₹5 lakh ₹6 lakh
Collections ₹5 lakh ₹10 lakh
Jewellery ₹2 lakh ₹6 lakh
FX Retail through eligible BBPS use case ₹5 lakh ₹5 lakh
Digital Term Deposit Account Opening ₹5 lakh ₹5 lakh
Important: These are NPCI ecosystem ceilings for eligible verified-merchant categories. NPCI explicitly allows member banks to set their own internal limits within these ceilings. The amount shown by SBI at payment time should therefore be treated as the operative limit.

SBI UPI Limit for IPO Applications

SBI's current UPI FAQ specifically states that IPO applications through UPI can use a limit of:

₹5 lakh per IPO application transaction

IPO payments generally operate through a mandate rather than an ordinary immediate person-to-person transfer.

The amount is blocked in the bank account after mandate authorisation and is debited according to allotment rules.

Do not compare an IPO UPI mandate limit directly with the normal ₹1 lakh P2P transfer limit.

UPI Limit for Credit Card Bill Payment

NPCI's newer verified-merchant framework permits eligible credit-card bill payments up to:

  • ₹5 lakh per transaction
  • ₹6 lakh cumulative in 24 hours

Actual SBI availability can depend on:

  • The merchant/category identification
  • The UPI application
  • The issuing bank
  • SBI's internal controls
  • Current NPCI implementation

Do not split a large credit-card bill into repeated payments merely to bypass a displayed limit.

SBI UPI Limits for New Users and New Devices

A newly registered UPI user or newly verified device can be subject to additional security restrictions.

SBI's public guidance notes that initial limits may vary because of:

  • New-user status
  • Recent UPI PIN set or reset
  • Device registration
  • Security controls
  • Transaction history
  • Bank risk assessment

The limit shown in the application should be followed even when it is lower than the standard ₹1 lakh.

Why Does SBI UPI Show “Limit Exceeded”?

Possible reasons include:

  • ₹1 lakh standard daily limit reached
  • ₹1 lakh per-transaction limit exceeded
  • 20 P2P transactions already completed in the applicable 24-hour period
  • UPI PIN cooling-period limit reached
  • New-user security restriction
  • Merchant or transaction-category limit
  • Account-level debit restriction
  • App-specific risk control
  • Bank-imposed temporary security limit

What to Do

  1. Check the payment amount.
  2. Review previous UPI transactions.
  3. Check whether the UPI PIN was recently reset.
  4. Confirm whether the payment is P2P or P2M.
  5. Check the limit displayed by the application.
  6. Wait for the applicable limit window to clear where necessary.
  7. Use another legitimate payment method for an urgent large payment if suitable.

Can You Increase the SBI UPI Daily Limit?

Customers generally cannot simply change the standard SBI UPI limit from ₹1 lakh to any amount they choose.

Higher limits are available only where:

  • The transaction category is eligible
  • The merchant is correctly verified or classified
  • NPCI permits the enhanced ceiling
  • SBI supports the applicable limit

Changing a UPI app or manually entering a larger amount does not convert a normal P2P transfer into a higher-limit transaction.

YONO SBI vs BHIM SBI Pay UPI Limits

SBI currently publishes the same standard post-cooling-period limit for:

  • BHIM SBI Pay
  • UPI on YONO SBI
  • YONO for Every Indian

That standard limit is currently ₹1 lakh per transaction and ₹1 lakh per day.

Individual screens and supported services can differ between applications.

For YONO registration help, read: YONO SBI App Guide .

Does Using Google Pay, PhonePe and YONO Increase the SBI UPI Limit?

Using several UPI apps does not necessarily provide a separate ₹1 lakh SBI bank-account limit on each application.

Limits can be enforced at:

  • Bank-account level
  • Bank level
  • UPI ecosystem level
  • Transaction category
  • Application risk-control level

Therefore, moving from one UPI app to another should not be treated as a reliable method for bypassing a limit already reached on the SBI account.

Do Failed SBI UPI Transactions Count toward the Limit?

The effect of a failed or reversed transaction on available limits can depend on the stage at which the transaction failed and when SBI or the UPI system updates the limit counters.

Do not assume the limit will immediately become available again simply because the transaction displays Failed.

Check:

  • Transaction History
  • Account debit or reversal
  • Current limit shown in the app

For failed or pending payments, read: SBI UPI Failed, Pending & Refund Guide .

Does SBI UPI Daily Limit Reset at Midnight?

Do not assume every SBI UPI restriction resets exactly at 12:00 midnight.

SBI describes the P2P count restriction as applying within 24 hours, and cooling periods are also measured using defined periods after registration or PIN reset.

Therefore, the actual availability can depend on:

  • The previous transaction time
  • The 24-hour transaction window
  • Cooling-period start time
  • SBI's processing logic

If the app still shows Limit Exceeded after midnight, wait for the applicable rolling period to complete rather than repeatedly attempting payments.

SBI UPI ATM Cash Withdrawal Limit

SBI supports cash withdrawal at eligible UPI QR Cash-enabled ATMs through UPI.

This service can have a separate ATM/cash-withdrawal limit from the normal UPI P2P payment limit.

The amount available depends on:

  • The ATM
  • The customer's account
  • SBI's withdrawal controls
  • The applicable UPI QR Cash limits

Follow the amount displayed by the ATM and UPI application.

SBI UPI International Payment Limit

SBI's published UPI guidance includes India-Singapore UPI remittance support up to the applicable SGD equivalent limit and also supports UPI payments at selected international merchant locations.

International UPI transactions can have:

  • Separate transaction ceilings
  • Currency-conversion rules
  • Country-specific availability
  • Merchant eligibility requirements

Do not assume the domestic ₹1 lakh limit is the only rule for an international UPI transaction.

Common SBI UPI Limit Problems and Solutions

Important SBI UPI limit rules including 20 P2P transactions cooling period failed payments and daily limit timing
Remember that SBI UPI limits can depend on transaction count,
cooling period, merchant category, failed payments and rolling 24-hour rules.
Problem What to check
₹1 lakh payment fails Check whether earlier payments have already used part of the daily limit.
Small payment fails after many transfers The 20-P2P-transactions rule may have been reached.
Only ₹5,000 available after PIN reset This can be SBI's cooling-period restriction.
iPhone remains limited after 24 hours SBI currently applies a ₹5,000-per-day initial restriction for five days on iOS after PIN set/reset.
UPI Lite only allows small payments UPI Lite is specifically intended for low-value transactions.
Higher-limit merchant payment fails The merchant may not be categorised as an eligible verified merchant or SBI may apply a lower internal limit.
Changing UPI app does not restore limit The restriction may be applied at the bank-account level rather than app level.
Limit still not restored after midnight Some restrictions operate on a 24-hour or cooling-period window instead of a simple calendar-day reset.
