SBI Positive Pay System – Registration, Cheque Details & Fraud Protection Guide

The SBI Positive Pay System is a cheque-fraud prevention facility that allows State Bank of India customers to reconfirm important details of an issued cheque before it is presented for payment.

After an eligible cheque-operated account is registered for Positive Pay, the customer provides details such as the cheque number, date, amount and payee name to SBI. When the cheque is later presented, the Bank can cross-check those details with the physical cheque or cheque image during payment processing.

SBI provides Positive Pay registration and cheque-detail submission through eligible channels including YONO SBI, YONO Lite, Retail Internet Banking, Corporate Internet Banking, SBI Quick SMS and SBI branches.

SBI Positive Pay System for cheque fraud protection through advance cheque detail verification
SBI Positive Pay helps verify important cheque details before payment
and adds an extra layer of protection against cheque alteration.
Important: SBI-HRMS.com is an independent informational website and is not affiliated with State Bank of India. Never enter your account number, Internet Banking password, MPIN, OTP, ATM PIN, UPI PIN or other confidential banking credentials on this Website. Use only an official SBI-controlled channel.
Quick answer: SBI Positive Pay works in two stages. First, register the cheque-operated account and select an account-level limit. After issuing a cheque that falls within the selected Positive Pay requirement, submit the cheque number, date, amount, beneficiary name and instrument type through an authorised SBI channel. The submitted information can then be compared with the cheque when it is presented.

What Is SBI Positive Pay System?

Positive Pay is a cheque-verification system intended to help identify alterations or mismatches in an issued cheque.

The drawer — the person or organisation issuing the cheque — informs SBI about important cheque details after issuing the cheque.

SBI stores the information and can compare it with the cheque presented for payment.

For example, the customer may submit:

  • Cheque number
  • Cheque date
  • Cheque amount
  • Payee name
  • Instrument type

If someone alters important information on the cheque after it is issued, Positive Pay provides another set of previously submitted details that can be used during verification.

Why Is Positive Pay Used?

Cheque fraud can involve alteration of:

  • Payee name
  • Cheque amount
  • Cheque date
  • Cheque details
  • Other variable information

Positive Pay gives the Bank advance information directly from the customer who issued the cheque.

When the cheque is presented, mismatched information may help identify a suspicious or altered instrument before payment is completed.

Positive Pay is therefore an additional cheque-security control. It does not replace normal cheque scrutiny, signature verification, account-balance checks or other banking rules.

How SBI Positive Pay Works

SBI Positive Pay three step process from account registration to cheque detail submission and verification
Register the eligible account, submit issued-cheque details
and allow SBI to compare the information when the cheque is presented.

SBI’s Positive Pay process has two main stages.

Stage 1: Register the Account

The customer registers an eligible cheque-operated account for Positive Pay and selects an account-level limit.

Stage 2: Submit Details of Issued Cheques

After issuing a cheque covered by the selected Positive Pay limit, the customer submits the required cheque details to SBI.

When the Cheque Is Presented

The Bank can compare the stored Positive Pay information with the physical cheque or cheque image presented for payment.

A mismatch can result in additional scrutiny or the cheque being returned unpaid according to applicable rules and SBI’s Positive Pay terms.

Who Can Register for SBI Positive Pay?

SBI provides Positive Pay to customers having eligible cheque-operated accounts.

This can include eligible:

  • Savings Bank accounts
  • Current Accounts
  • Cash Credit accounts
  • Overdraft accounts
  • Individual cheque-operated accounts
  • Joint accounts
  • Business and corporate accounts

The exact digital registration options depend on the account type, operating mandate and Internet or mobile-banking access.

Accounts without cheque-operation facility cannot use Positive Pay for cheque issuance.

What Is the SBI Positive Pay Account-Level Limit?

During Positive Pay registration, SBI requires the customer to select an account-level limit.

This limit determines which issued cheques need Positive Pay details to be submitted under that registration.

For example:

If a customer chooses an account-level limit of ₹1,00,000, Positive Pay details would generally be submitted for issued cheques of ₹1,00,000 or more under that selected arrangement.

SBI’s public Positive Pay information states that customers can choose the account-level amount according to their risk perception, subject to any limits or mandatory requirements implemented by the Bank.

A customer who wants stronger control may choose a lower account-level limit where the system permits it.

Is SBI Positive Pay Mandatory for ₹5 Lakh or ₹10 Lakh Cheques?

Current-status clarification: Do not assume that ₹5 lakh and ₹10 lakh are already mandatory Positive Pay thresholds simply because these amounts appear on SBI’s public information page.

SBI’s current public Positive Pay page states that the Bank is planning to make Positive Pay mandatory for:

  • Savings Bank cheques of ₹5 lakh and above
  • Current Account, Cash Credit and Overdraft cheques of ₹10 lakh and above

The same SBI page describes what would happen once the mandatory clauses are made effective.

Therefore, the public wording should not be interpreted as confirmation that those thresholds have already become mandatory for every SBI customer.

As of this article’s review on August 8, 2026, customers should check:

  • The current YONO or Internet Banking screen
  • Messages received from SBI
  • The account-specific Positive Pay registration limit
  • Current branch instructions
  • Any newer SBI or RBI notification

Do not rely on an older third-party article that simply states “Positive Pay is mandatory above ₹5 lakh” without checking the current SBI rule.

Available SBI Positive Pay Registration Methods

SBI officially lists these registration channels:

  • SBI branch
  • Retail Internet Banking
  • Corporate Internet Banking
  • YONO Lite
  • YONO SBI mobile application

SBI Quick SMS is primarily listed as a channel for submitting cheque details after Positive Pay registration, rather than as the main account-registration route.

SBI lists YONO SBI as an authorised Positive Pay registration channel.

How to Register SBI Positive Pay at a Branch

Customers can register a cheque-operated account through an SBI branch by submitting the prescribed Positive Pay application, consent and undertaking.

The form generally records:

  • Account number
  • Account type
  • Account-level Positive Pay limit
  • Customer consent
  • Signature according to the account mandate

Branch registration can be useful when:

  • Positive Pay is not visible online
  • The customer does not use YONO or Internet Banking
  • The account is jointly operated
  • The account is a business or institutional account
  • The required digital verification fails
  • The account-level limit needs clarification

What Is Positive Pay Cheque Lodgement?

After Positive Pay registration, cheque lodgement means submitting the important details of a cheque that has been issued.

It does not mean depositing the physical cheque into the payee’s account.

The drawer submits the cheque information to SBI so that the Bank has a separate set of details available when the cheque is later presented.

Simple difference: Issuing the cheque gives the physical instrument to the payee. Positive Pay lodgement sends the cheque details to SBI for verification.

Details Required for SBI Positive Pay

SBI Positive Pay required details including account number cheque number date amount payee name and instrument type
Enter the account number, cheque number, date, amount, payee name

SBI lists six main details:

  3. Cheque Date
  4. Cheque Amount
  5. Beneficiary or Payee Name

What Is the Instrument Type in SBI Positive Pay?

SBI’s YONO navigation document lists instrument-type dropdown values such as:

  • 10
  • 11
  • 29
  • 31

Do not select a number simply because it appears in an online guide.

Select the instrument type that corresponds to the actual cheque being issued and the option shown by SBI.

If the instrument type is unclear, check the cheque or obtain clarification from SBI before submitting Positive Pay information.

using the official CHQL SMS format from the registered mobile number.

SBI Quick can be used to lodge cheque details after the account has been registered for Positive Pay.

The fields represent:

  • CHQL – Positive Pay cheque lodgement keyword
  • ChequeNo – issued cheque number
  • Amount – exact cheque amount
  • DDMMYYYY – date of issue
  • Y/N – Multi City / Normal flag according to SBI’s current instruction

The account number is taken from the account currently mapped with SBI Quick.

Important: Before using the CHQL SMS facility, confirm that the correct account is registered with SBI Quick and enrolled in Positive Pay. Do not guess the SMS fields.

After processing, SBI sends an SMS confirmation regarding the cheque-detail submission status.

Submit Positive Pay Cheque Details at an SBI Branch

Customers can provide cheque details directly at an SBI branch using the prescribed Positive Pay cheque-details format.

Keep ready:

  • Account number

How to View or Cancel a Positive Pay Request

  3. Select View Requests.
  4. Select the account.
  5. Enter or select the cheque number and instrument type.
  6. Review the submitted cheque information.
  7. Select Delete or Cancel where available.
  8. Complete OTP authentication.
  9. Save the confirmation reference.

Internet Banking

The Positive Pay service may provide a Cancel, Lost or Delete Lodgement option.

Use cancellation only when the cheque information genuinely needs to be withdrawn or replaced.

What If Wrong Positive Pay Details Were Submitted?

Do not ignore an incorrect Positive Pay entry.

Examples include:

  • Wrong cheque amount
  • Incorrect payee name
  • Wrong date
  • Incorrect cheque number
  • Wrong instrument type

Where the current SBI channel allows it:

  1. Open the lodged-cheque request.
  2. Cancel or delete the incorrect lodgement.
  3. Complete the required OTP verification.
  4. Submit a fresh Positive Pay request.
  5. Match every field with the physical cheque before confirmation.

When cancellation or correction is unavailable, contact SBI before the cheque is presented.

Do not alter the physical cheque merely to make it match an incorrect Positive Pay entry.

What Happens If Positive Pay Details Do Not Match the Cheque?

SBI’s Positive Pay terms state that when the submitted details do not match the corresponding physical cheque, the cheque can be returned unpaid at the Bank’s discretion.

Possible mismatch areas include:

  • Cheque number
  • Cheque date
  • Amount
  • Payee name
  • Instrument type

Therefore, always compare the Positive Pay submission with the final cheque before confirming it.

Do not lodge an approximate amount or shortened beneficiary name merely for convenience.

SBI Positive Pay vs Stop Cheque

Difference between SBI Positive Pay Stop Cheque and cheque clearing status services
Positive Pay verifies issued-cheque details, Stop Cheque requests payment to be stopped,
while Clearing Status shows cheque-processing progress.
Point Positive Pay Stop Cheque
Purpose Reconfirm cheque details for verification Instruct SBI not to pay the specified cheque where the instruction is received in time
Used when Issuing a cheque covered by Positive Pay Cheque is lost, issued incorrectly or payment needs to be stopped
Expected payment Customer generally expects a valid cheque to be paid Customer is asking that the cheque not be paid

For stop-payment and cheque-book services, read: SBI Cheque Book Request & Tracking Guide .

Positive Pay vs Cheque Clearing Status

Positive Pay submits cheque information before payment.

Cheque clearing status tells the customer what is happening after or when the cheque enters the payment or clearing process.

Positive Pay Clearing Status
Provides cheque details in advance Shows processing or payment status
Fraud-prevention control Transaction-status enquiry

Positive Pay vs SBI Cheque Book Request

Requesting a cheque book only obtains new cheque leaves.

Positive Pay is used after the cheque-operated account is registered and when details of an issued cheque need to be reconfirmed.

The typical order is:

  1. Receive an eligible SBI cheque book.
  2. Register the account for Positive Pay where required or desired.
  3. Write and issue the cheque.
  4. Submit the cheque details through Positive Pay.
  5. Keep the payment funds available.
  6. The cheque is presented and processed according to normal banking rules.

Does Positive Pay Guarantee Cheque Payment?

No.

SBI’s Positive Pay terms make it clear that providing cheque details does not create a right to have the cheque paid.

The cheque can still be affected by:

  • Insufficient account balance
  • Signature mismatch
  • Stale cheque
  • Post-dated cheque presented early
  • Stop-payment instruction
  • Account restriction
  • Material alteration
  • Incorrect cheque details
  • Legal or regulatory restrictions
  • Other normal cheque-return reasons

Keep sufficient funds available even after successful Positive Pay lodgement.
